What is Traffic Calming? -
I suggest:
The
process whereby drivers are encouraged or forced
through engineering measures, kerbline
alterations, traffic islands, road signs,
markings, audible warning devices and/or
enforcement to adjust their driving
characteristics to that more suitable for the
environment concerned, with the aim of enhancing
road safety or reducing the apparent and/or real
risk of danger to road users or damage to
property.
Traffic
calming mainly involves controlling vehicle
speeds but may also include reducing or
preventing overtaking, incorrect manoeuvres or
even preventing complete passage overall.
|
| Very early on in my work on
mini-roundabouts it became clear that there was a
need for a comprehensive work on traffic calming.
Everyone seems to have given traffic calming a
go, but all to often it has resulted in mixed
success and in some cases a scheme has proved an
expensive failure. There are pitfalls to be
avoided and I hope in the seminar series that I
have now started to help you avoid the pitfalls
and get the best of what is available.
|
Traffic Calming remains a very
effective tool in reducing casualties and I
believe that there is enormous scope on main
roads in town and villages using vertical
deflections that have to be more carefully built
than simple speed tables; but the rewards are
there in considerable casualty reductions
possible on lengths where there is usually some
concentration of accidents. |
The Seminar/Workshop
I have
now prepared a seminar on traffic calming (as always
subject to modification and updating).
This has been presented to Parkman at Ealing, Wiltshire
CC, IHIE SW, Cornwall CC with IHIE, Derbyshire CC, E
Sussex CC, the Isle of Man government, Fife Council &
W Sussex CC.
